Hosiery: Friend not Foe

Stockings aren't just for fireplaces.

I know there are many women out there with an intense aversion to said clothing item, but really, no need to penalize the item for your mother having exploited them at your debutante ball. They're one of the best winter accessories around!

The first advantage is more practical than stylish; they really do shave off the chill factor on cold—not freezing— fall/winter nights. On nights when you're transitioning from inside to outside (or vice versa) it's a good way to ditch the pants but not freeze your legs off trying to be cute with a skirt/dress.

Secondly, they can be a good way to balance the color in an outfit. Here, I'm wearing a navy dress, navy pumps and a powder blue, Peter Pan collar jacket. The gray stockings bring a little bit of that lighter color palette down to the bottom of the outfit. This is NOT an excuse to go crazy. Some colored stockings are better left with Santa. More on this later.

If you haven't already noted my disclaimer, aside from their occasional corporate usage,  I tend to prefer stockings exclusively at night (with very few exceptions). This is mostly because their sheer nature makes them prone to reflect light in a sequin-esque way, which is NEVER okay during the day. I repeat,  sequins are never okay during the day—it's really just inconsiderate.

If they still aren't a palatable idea—just think of them as sheer leggings and that should do it!

But seriously, don't miss out.

Fondly,
The Style Scribe
